Groesbeek Heights
WWII 1944 Terrain – Operation Market Garden, Netherlands

Groesbeek Heights

September 17, 1944, a fleet of C-47 aircraft carried elements of the 82nd Airborne Division toward drop zones near Groesbeek. Situated near the German border and east of the Grave Bridge, this sector was assigned to the 82nd Airborne as part of Operation Market Garden. Their mission was to secure the Groesbeek Heights and advance north toward Nijmegen.

Control of the Heights was critical. From this high ground, forces could observe movement along key roads and protect the southern flank of the airborne corridor.

Editor’s Note

Work in Progress:
Built for a combination of battles, with Groesbeek as the terrain’s focal point.

Airborne and glider landings – The satellite map was painted by hand to give a more natural feel at a distance.
Static combat – Hamlets, farms, and points of interest intended for tactical raids.
UK & Canadian gameplay – In February 1945, Groesbeek served as a major staging area for Operation Veritable, the Allied offensive that pushed east through the Reichswald Forest toward the Rhine.

Points of Interest

Groesbeek
Groesbeek and its surrounding high ground were subjected to repeated German counterattacks as Allied airborne and ground forces worked to secure the Heights. Fighting in and around the town reflected the broader struggle to hold elevated terrain critical to the southern flank of Operation Market Garden.

Breedeweg
Located near Drop Zone T, Breedeweg became an early focal point as airborne units assembled under pressure following scattered landings. The surrounding farmland and road network made it vulnerable to probing attacks and artillery fire.

De Kamp
Near Drop Zone N, the De Kamp area saw rapid consolidation by airborne troops amid confusion from dispersed landings. Control of the surrounding fields was essential to securing movement between drop zones and defensive positions.

Voxhil
Voxhil farmhouse was used at different times by both German and Allied forces as an improvised first aid and casualty collection point.

De Horst
De Horst became a heavily contested area due to its position along key approaches to the Groesbeek Heights. Fighting here involved infantry engagements, artillery fire, and repeated attempts to gain or deny access to the surrounding high ground.

Wyler
Wyler overlooked key routes leading toward Germany, offering observation over movement along nearby roads and approaches.

Mook
German forces attempted to break through Allied defenses via the Mook Corridor, seeking access to the Maas–Waal corridor from the southeast. The area saw sustained pressure as defensive lines were tested along roads, river crossings, and narrow terrain.
