WWII 1944 Terrain – Normandy, France

Pont de la Fière

On June 6, 1944, elements of the 82nd Airborne Division dropped into Normandy as part of the Allied invasion of France. Among their most critical objectives was the area around La Fière, a narrow causeway and bridge crossing the Merderet River near Sainte-Mère-Église. Control of this crossing was vital to securing movement inland and linking airborne troops scattered across the Cotentin Peninsula.

The fighting around La Fière became some of the fiercest endured by the 82nd Airborne on D-Day and in the days that followed. Paratroopers, often isolated and under heavy pressure, fought to hold the bridge and causeway against repeated German counterattacks. Surrounded by flooded fields, exposed roads, and limited cover, the battle for La Fière became a brutal struggle over one of the most important crossing points in the invasion sector.

Editor’s Note

Work in Progress:
Built around the fighting at Pont de la Fière and the surrounding D-Day battlefield.

• Airborne landings and early invasion combat – Designed to reflect the chaotic scattered drops and rapid consolidation of paratroopers in the opening hours of June 6.
• Static combat – Causeways, farms, flooded fields, and defensive positions intended for tactical engagements and assaults.
• Historical combined-arms gameplay – Focused on the prolonged struggle between American airborne forces and German defenders around key crossings and approach roads.

Points of Interest

Pont de la Fière
The bridge and causeway at La Fière formed one of the most important objectives in the Merderet sector. Fighting here was intense, as American paratroopers struggled to seize and hold the crossing against determined German resistance and repeated counterattacks.

La Fière Causeway
This raised road crossing through flooded lowlands became a deadly bottleneck. Troops moving across the exposed causeway were vulnerable to machine-gun fire, mortar fire, and artillery, making every attempt to advance costly.

Manoir de la Fière
The manor near the bridge served as a strongpoint and rallying location during the battle. Its position overlooking the crossing made the surrounding area tactically important throughout the engagement.

Merderet Floodplain
The flooded fields around La Fière shaped the entire battle. These marshy lowlands restricted movement, funneled troops toward the roads and causeways, and left attacking forces exposed in open terrain.

Sainte-Mère-Église Approaches
Routes leading from Sainte-Mère-Église toward La Fière were critical for reinforcement and coordination between airborne units. These approaches connected the initial drop zones with the contested river crossings.

Cauquigny
Located west of the Merderet, Cauquigny became an important objective tied to efforts to expand control beyond the bridgehead. The hamlet and its surrounding roads played a role in the wider fight for access across the river.

Farmland and Hedgerows
The surrounding Norman countryside offered both concealment and danger. Hedgerows, ditches, orchards, and farm compounds created fragmented close-range fighting conditions ideal for ambushes, defense, and maneuver warfare.
