Prisoner (BattleBlock Theater)
"Never lose hope! I know I did!" – The Narrator
The Prisoner from BattleBlock Theater has arrived in Rivals of Aether! While they lack range on most of their normals, they have many projectiles at their disposal, and can manipulate the trajectory of them with their attacks!
By hitting any of Prisoner’s projectiles (whether you are the Prisoner or not), you can push them around, allowing for unique mixups and combos!
Their biggest strength is their frame data and combo game – Prisoner has many fast options that are near-instant when under pressure, namely forward tilt, jab, and up tilt, the former of which comes out at frame 3 and the latter two coming out at frame 4. Forward tilt and up tilt also have low base knockback, allowing them to easily combo into a neutral aerial, or, in the case of up tilt, itself. Off the ground, Prisoner also has deadly aerials – down aerial, due to being a projectile, is safe on most attacks and can easily follow up into an up tilt, neutral aerial is a multihit capable of performing dragdown combos, back aerial can combo into itself and take stocks very early when used offstage, up aerial possesses surprisingly low knockback, making it a good juggle tool, and forward air is a powerful spike, killing middleweights around 80%!
Their strong attacks are versatile, too – up strong is a powerful KO confirm that comes out at frame 11 and KOs around 120%, down strong freezes opponents for an additional second, and forward strong fires a highly damaging, transcendent projectile.
On top of all of this, Prisoner also has a variety of powerful projectiles, which, thanks to their unique gimmick, allows them to mix up their gameplay quite a lot. Neutral special launches a disc that can easily intercept opponents offstage, possibly leading to a gimp – onstage, it turns into a powerful explosive capable of KOing around 100%. Forward special fires an acid bubble that is largely stationary, but very strong, allowing it to be used for KO setups, or simply to complicate an opponent’s recovery. Finally, while forward strong is not affected by their projectile gimmick, it’s also transcendent, meaning it will go through your enemy’s attacks!
Prisoner isn’t without weaknesses, however. Enemies can also benefit from the projectile gimmick and intercept incoming projectiles with their own attacks, turning Prisoner’s combos into their own. This makes their ranged game unreliable at best, especially considering the long windups of most of their ranged moves. This is only made worse by the fact that their only disjointed normal is down strong, causing them to struggle to approach against characters with bigger hitboxes than them. They can also struggle to KO, as, outside of situational moves like forward aerial offstage or combos into neutral special, most of their KO moves are too slow or small to be comboed into reliably.
All in all, Prisoner is a unique character with great frame data and combos (as well as some situational but strong KO setups), but can struggle to approach against characters who outrange them, and has issues with closing out stocks.
Prisoner throws an exploding disc. It won’t arm until it hits the ground, causing it to do low knockback and damage on contact with opponents. However, once it hits the ground, it becomes a powerful move that can kill early and do a lot of damage. Can be pushed around by any attack.
Prisoner launches an acid bubble from their acid bubble launcher. While its range is rather short for a projectile and it moves slowly, you can hit it with your own moves to push it around and hit players with it. It also has high damage and KO potential, and its rather stationary nature allows it to be used as a strong edgeguarding tool.
Prisoner pulls out a jetpack and launches upwards. This move has high knockback and does a good amount of damage, but is relatively slow and leaves the user helpless after using it, making it not a great choice for combos. It can, however, work as a niche KO confirm offstage, thanks to a stronger side hitbox.
Prisoner pulls out a fan that reflects projectiles, with relatively long range. This move also prevents any friendly projectiles from being reflected with attacks, allowing you to pressure more defensive playstyles.
– Prisoner has a custom AI! It’s still a work in progress, though right now it can be pretty challenging to deal with if it gets into advantage! (I’d also recommend not having more than 1 at a time, since it can be laggy!)
– Prisoner’s down aerial increases in damage and knockback based on what attacks hit it – hitting it with a forward aerial or back aerial will result in a stronger hit than if you were to hit it with a neutral aerial.
– Prisoner has mod compatability with Mt. Dedede stadium, Little Mac’s Boxing Ring, Unregistered HyperCam 2, and Neptendo.
