HK G11 – "Kraut Space Magic"
Note: This is my first mod for IV2. It’s basically been a case of "Wait, no one has done this yet?! Okay, I’m just gonna do it myself then…"
If you are unfamiliar with the HK G11, here’s a quick rundown:
In order to improve an individual soldier’s hit rate at any significant range, one of the ideas that engineers came up with in the mid-20th century was to enable such a quick succession of shots in a burst that the last bullet had already left the barrel by the time the recoil reached the rifleman’s shoulder. Heckler & Koch also decided to go with an unconventional concept for the G11, that is, using caseless ammunition. For this purpose, a new cartridge in 4.73x33mm was developed. The bullets themselves are encased in a high-ignition temperature propellant so weight and space for casings could be saved. One of the main benefits was reduced ammunition weight, meaning an individual soldier could easily carry two or three times as much ammo compared to conventional calibers (i.e. 5.56mm).
The project was under development between the 1960s and up until the late 1980s. Initial problems with ammo cookoffs had been solved and the G11 rifle, now designated G11K2, was ready for mass production.
And then the Berlin wall came down and everything changed. Due to the now much-reduced risk for war at its own doorstep, combined with the economic burden that came with the reunification, the German government decided to cancel all orders for the G11 (which ultimately led to the adoption of a more conventional army service rifle, namely the G36).
Nowadays, internet users jokingly like to refer to the G11 as "Kraut Space Magic", because of how complex the firing mechanism (that has to rotate the bullets from the top-mounted magazine into firing position) is.
According to rumors as many as over a thousand of these rifles had already been manufactured when all produciton was stopped. Just don’t ask how this old gunsmith got his hands on one of them – or any of the modifications for it.
This mod contains not only a fully functional G11 rifle, but also a sizable number of attachments for it:
- 8 different sights
- Extended barrel
- 2 barrel mods
- 3 magazine mods (including an LMG conversion kit!)
- 2 different springs
- 2 unique mods to further increase rate of fire
- 2 stocks
- Improved trigger
- The G11’s unique "triple magazine catch" feature for quicker reloads
- 2 laser pointers
- 3 foregrips (one of which is unique to the LMG conversion)
- Comfort grip
- 4 different types of 4.73x33mm ammuniton (standard, match, subsonic, overpressure)
There are no currently known issues.
