Description:
Taíno Cacicazgos of Hispaniola – Playable Tags

A historical flavor mod focused on making the Taíno cacicazgos of Hispaniola fully playable settled countries based on archaeological and colonial textual evidence, with custom governments, names, localization, and mechanics aimed at representing the political and urban complexity of the island at first contact.

This mod is based on my original research and design proposal arguing that the Taíno chiefdoms of Hispaniola were organized state-level societies with major population centers, formal rulership, public works, tribute systems, and coordinated warfare, and therefore deserve representation as Settled Countries rather than Societies of Pops (At least until SoP’s are more fleshed out in the future).

Original historical/design proposal:

The goal of this project is to give much-needed attention to a region that is often overlooked in grand strategy, while staying grounded in the documented political reality of late 15th-century Hispaniola and Borikén.

This was originally developed as part of the NWIP effort, but with that project currently dormant, I decided to release it as a standalone mod so it can continue growing on its own.

Current Features
  • 6 playable Taíno tags: 5 cacicazgos from Hispaniola (Maguana, Magua, Marien, Higuey, Jaragua) and 1 cacicazgo from Puerto Rico / Borikén.
  • Custom Taíno character names and dynasty names.
  • Quisqueya kingdom-tier formable for unifying Hispaniola.
  • Full rank localization for: County, Duchy, Kingdom, and Empire.
  • Additional Taíno localization flavor for: Estates and Parliament.
  • 2 new government reforms: Chiefdom (Aimed at constraining the rate of expansion in the early game) and Paramount Chiefdom.
  • 1 new disaster (Rapid Collapse of Society): Represents demographic collapse and the risk of devolving into Societies of Pops. Triggers if the Great Pestilence arrives before government reform.
  • 1 estate privilege (Tribal Society): Aimed at blocking the capacity for tribal pops to promote until certain conditions are met.
  • 6 tribal buildings: to manage the economy while in tribal phase.
  • 1 new production method (Seafaring Canoes): Allows naval supply production without tin. Intentionally inefficient for balance and historical flavor.

Planned / TODO
  • Advances
  • Historical events
  • Government and economic balance
  • Religion overhaul / flavor expansion
  • More cultural flavor
  • More dynamic collapse and reform paths

Compatibility

Great care was taken to make this mod as compatible as possible. It relies almost entirely on new files, using implicit replacement or injection for the entries affecting the modified tags.

Currently, it should only conflict with mods that alter the localization of country ranks and estates, due to how the engine reads files within that specific folder (customizable_localization).

Project Status

This is currently a barebones first standalone release, focused on establishing the historical framework and making the region playable.

I fully intend to keep iterating on it and give this often-forgotten part of the world the attention it deserves.

Please feel free to report bugs, historical suggestions, balance ideas, or feature requests.
