Description:

This is my submission for the world train contest.

The LMS Jubilee Class was a class of 4 – 6 – 0 express passenger steam locomotives built for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway between 1934 and 1936. Designed by Sir William Stanier, they were intended as mixed-traffic engines capable of hauling both fast passenger trains and heavier secondary services. A total of 191 were built, making them one of the LMS’s most numerous express classes.

Originally nicknamed the “Red Stanier,” the class became known as the Jubilee Class after the first five engines were named to celebrate Silver Jubilee of King George V. Early engines suffered from poor steaming and performance, but modifications to draughting and exhaust systems greatly improved them.

They became a common sight across Britain, especially on routes in the Midlands, North West, and Scotland. During World War II, many hauled troop and freight trains as well as passenger services. Withdrawals began in the 1960s with dieselisation, and the last left service in 1967. Several survive in preservation today, including the famous LMS Jubilee Class No. 45596 Bahamas and LMS Jubilee Class No. 45690 Leander.
