Description:

Renames every map label in EU5 — continents, regions, provinces, cities — in multiple cultures. More cultures shipping over time.

Supported cultures

  • Latin: 100%
  • English: 100%
  • Old Norse / Norn: 100%
  • French / Francien: 100%

Planned (vote in the comments for which you want next)

  • French, German, Spanish, Portuguese
  • Russian, Polish, Italian
  • Greek, Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish
  • Mandarin, Japanese, Hindi

The engine picks the right language for each tile based on the in-game naming rule + the active culture. Every supported language ships in this one mod — no need to install multiples.

English here is a full re-imagining: the entire world re-toponymed as if English colonists had discovered and named every inch of it. Bordeaux becomes Waterside, Rome becomes Romeford, Peking becomes Kingscross. Latin is the historical layer — real Roman, medieval and Renaissance Latin names. Old Norse / Norn is a third re-imagining: the world as if the Vikings colonized every inch of it — Constantinople becomes Miklagarðr, Moscow becomes Móskvuborg, York is Jórvík, Jerusalem is Jórsalaheim. French / Francien is a fourth re-imagining: the world as if France colonized every inch of it. Real period-French exonyms anchor everything — Pékin for Beijing, Moscou, Londres, Le Caire, Tombouctou, Nouvelle-Orléans, Saint-Pétersbourg, Pondichéry, Saïgon, Tananarive — and the rest is colonial-French naming (Saint-X, Nouvelle-X, Port-X, Fort-X, Cap-X, Île-X, Mont-X, Anse-X, Baie-X, Rivière-X) with meaning-calques rather than generic -ville endings.

Pair Latin with the Latin Culture movement from Fate of the Phoenix.

Setup required. In the new-game settings, set the location-naming option to Dominant culture of owner or Dominant culture in location – NOT ‘Standard English’. Then play a country whose primary culture is one of the supported ones, or any country whose tiles have those pops (under ‘Dominant culture in location’).

Sources
Every name is either documented in historic scholarship (classical Roman authors, medieval chroniclers, Jesuit and Catholic mission chancery, Mercator / Ortelius and the Renaissance cartographers, Marco Polo, Cook and Roggeveen, East India Company atlases) or carefully reconstructed via the source language’s own toponym patterns. No naive ‘-um’ suffixing on foreign roots; no anachronistic modern names.

Compatibility: additive only. No replace_paths, no conflicts with any other mod.
