Thompson submachine gun (Tommy Gun)

The Thompson submachine gun, widely known as the “Tommy Gun,” is one of the most iconic firearms of the 20th century. It was developed in the United States by John T. Thompson and produced by Auto-Ordnance Company.

Chambered in .45 ACP, the Thompson operates using a blowback system (early models used a delayed blowback concept), delivering powerful close-range fire.

It is well known for its high rate of fire, distinctive sound, and the use of both box and drum magazines, offering significant firepower.

The weapon features a wooden stock and foregrip, giving it a classic and recognizable appearance.

Historical Background

The Thompson submachine gun was developed in the aftermath of World War I, with the goal of creating a “trench broom” for close combat.

Although it arrived too late for WWI, it gained notoriety during the Prohibition era in the United States, where it was used by both law enforcement and organized crime groups.

The Thompson later saw extensive service during World War II, becoming a standard submachine gun for U.S. and Allied forces.

Variants such as the M1928 and M1A1 were widely issued and became symbols of American infantry firepower.

Today, the Tommy Gun remains a cultural icon, appearing in countless films, games, and historical collections.
