Mein Fuhrer (1941)
"It is thus necessary that the individual should finally come to realize that his own ego is of no importance in comparison with the existence of the nation."- Adolf Hitler
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
On November 8th, 1939, Georg Elser’s plan to kill Adolf Hitler succeeded. During a meeting, the bomb went off, killing 9 people (one of them being Hitler) and injuring over 60 others. After Hitler’s death, there was a massive power gap between multiple leaders. What began as a small argument quickly escalated, as multiple leaders attempted to take control of Germany, it caused the country to fall apart. Seeing this, Czechoslovakia retook the Sudetenland.
In the same year, due to the effects of the Great Purge, people in the Soviet Union began to rebel against the ruling government. When the military was ordered to suppress the rebels, they instead turned against the government, and a Second Russian Civil War began.
At the start of the new year, Polish nationalists staged a coup, overthrowing the republic and forming the “Nationalist State of Poland.” As a result, nationalism spread even further across Europe, soon taking hold in Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Yugoslavia, the Baltics, Russia, Greece, and Spain.
In 1941, after nationalists took control of the government in Spain, the country experienced serious unrest. This was worsened when the nationalists joined the “Nationalist Frontier of Europe,” prompting monarchists to launch an armed rebellion. In Italy, Fascist Italy, lacking a strong northern ally, collapsed, leading to the restoration of the Kingdom of Italy. It then formed the Mediterranean Union with the Kingdom of Spain. In Yugoslavia, after Italian, nationalist, and communist influence intensified, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia fell into civil war.
In France, extreme and violent polarization between far-right leagues and growing leftist ideologies, combined with increasing influence from foreign powers, caused the nation to fracture. In Turkey, a communist party seized power and began expanding its borders. Nationalist Greece, recognizing the threat, prepared to stop Turkey before it could expand further into mainland Europe.
