PLA Sukhoi Su-27UBK
The Su-27UBK is an export variant of the Su-27UB twin-seat fighter developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau. Classified as a heavy twin-seat combat trainer with the NATO reporting name Flanker-C, it was the primary companion trainer aircraft imported alongside the Su-27SK single-seat fighters by China in the 1990s, and manufactured by the Irkutsk Aviation Plant in Russia. Featuring a classic tandem twin-seat layout, twin engines and conventional aerodynamic configuration, it inherits the outstanding aerodynamic design of the Su-27 family, delivering superior high-altitude high-speed performance and long-range endurance. It undertakes advanced conversion training for third-generation fighter pilots and can independently conduct air superiority missions, long-range escort patrols and other operational tasks.
China imported a total of forty Su-27UBK fighters in multiple batches and deployed them to frontline Air Force units. These aircraft filled the gap in domestic heavy third-generation trainer jets, accelerated the establishment of a complete pilot training system, and laid a solid foundation for the localized production, mass service and combat capability development of the subsequent J-11 series fighters. Long stationed at frontline aviation units, these jets have been regularly engaged in combat readiness duties and military exercises. After decades of service and multiple life extension upgrades, the earliest delivered airframes have been in service for more than thirty years and are approaching the end of their operational lifespan. With the large-scale commissioning of domestically developed twin-seat heavy fighters including the J-11BS and J-16, the Su-27UBK is gradually phased out from frontline combat missions and now mainly serves in flight training and tactical coordination drills.
