PLA Shenyang J-11BS
The J-11BS is an independently developed and improved domestic twin-seat heavy multirole fighter built upon the aerodynamic layout of the Su-27UB. As an extensively localized Flanker variant with the NATO reporting name Flanker-B+, it is a key domestically-produced twin-seat aircraft developed by the Chinese Air Force to replace the aging Su-27UBK and refine its third-generation fighter operation and training system, manufactured by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. Adopting a proven tandem twin-seat layout, domestic turbofan engines and optimized aerodynamic shaping, it retains the exceptional aerodynamic qualities of the Su-27 family while featuring upgraded avionics. Possessing outstanding maneuverability and endurance, it is capable of conducting advanced conversion and tactical training for heavy fighter aircrews, alongside independent operational tasks including air interdiction, ground strikes, close escort and long-range air surveillance.
Mass-produced using accumulated domestic Flanker technologies, the J-11BS has been commissioned into multiple frontline Air Force aviation units. It has filled the technical blank for indigenous heavy twin-seat fighters, further improved the PLA Air Force’s long-term third-generation pilot training system, and consolidated the technical foundation for the research, iteration and mass deployment of advanced domestic heavy fighters such as the J-16, as well as the overall upgrade of the Air Force’s offensive-defensive combat capabilities. Serving permanently in frontline combat units, the J-11BS frequently participates in combat exercises, patrol missions and joint adversarial drills. Through continuous avionics revisions and structural enhancements, it boasts superior reliability and digital performance compared to early Russian-built Flanker airframes. Amid ongoing Air Force modernization, the J-11BS retains formidable combat potency. Balancing advanced flight instruction and frontline readiness, it remains an indispensable twin-seat heavy fighter within the current Chinese Air Force fleet.
