The Franchi SPAS-12 (Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun) is an Italian-made 12-gauge combat shotgun produced by Franchi from 1979 to 2000, designed primarily for military and law-enforcement roles. Its defining trait is a dual-mode action, allowing the user to switch between gas-operated semi-automatic fire for full-power loads and manual pump-action for low-pressure or specialty ammunition. Built around a heavy steel receiver, the SPAS-12 typically features a 21.5-inch barrel, a tubular magazine holding 8 rounds plus one in the chamber, and weighs nearly 10 pounds unloaded, giving it a solid, recoil-dampening feel. Common configurations include iron sights, a heat shield, a magazine cut-off for selective loading, and either a fixed synthetic stock or a folding steel stock with a distinctive arm hook, all contributing to its reputation as a rugged, unconventional, and instantly recognizable tactical shotgun.
