Description:

The killer teddy bear from Pokémon Sun and Moon makes its debut in Rivals of Aether! Bewear just wants a big hug but unfortunately its arms are so powerful it can snap anything it hugs.

Bewear is your traditional platform fighter heavyweight whose moves deal huge damage but lacks any form of projectile or stage control and is very slow overall but in movement speed and move execution. It may be tough to get in, but when you do your opponents really feel it.

Gimmick – DSpecial: Fluffy

Bewear takes out an Ability Capsule, eats it and in the process changes its ability to Fluffy. This will temporarily alter Bewear’s knockback and damage taken stats, it will take less damage and knockback from physical attacks but double damage and knockback from projectiles.

Fluffy also adds super armour to Bewear’s Strongs, NSpecial and USpecial. However when these moves are used Fluffy will be instantly removed.

Neutral Special – A Great Big Hug/Bide

Would it be Bewear if it DIDN’T have this move? Bewear leans backwards with its arms raised before quickly moving forward in an attempt to have a hug. While Bewear is enjoying its hug, the opponent certainly won’t! On the ground they will take constant damage until they are hugged so hard that they are knocked out of it, Bewear’s hugs are lethal. If you grab someone in the air you will fall with them until you hit a platform for Bewear to start really doing damage. If you fall down a pit with another player you will screenwarp to the top of the screen and into the centre of the stage, preventing suicide attempts with this move. The opponent has a brief window to escape the grab if they shield right before they are being choked, if they escape Bewear will play out its huge before getting confused and retreating back, leaving it more open to being punished.

Forward Special – Take Down

Bewear leans backwards on one foot before charging forward on all fours, this is the fastest move in its kit, able to run significantly faster than its base speed. This move can be used to recover to stage or close down your opponent but beware, Take Down causes Bewear to receive 5% recoil damage when the attack connects, ending the attack prematurely and knocking Bewear backwards. This damage can be reduced if Fluffy is active.

USpecial – Superpower

Hmm, this move seems familiar! Bewear starts charging up energy before launching itself high into the air in a very narrow fashion. The longer you hold the button for the higher Bewear launches. This move doesn’t go into pratfall at the end and can be cancelled into normals after a set period of time. This move has super armour if Fluffy is active…

Bewear also has two other grabs as part of its Jab and UAir, these are simpler in execution.

And that’s it really. This character is very simple and straight forward to play, you just hit people with attacks and they do a lot of damage. There isn’t really any complex extra mechanics to the normals beyond Jab being a grab. Classic heavyweight stuff.

Hope you enjoy this character. Pokémon was a large part of what got me into play video games in the first place, its kind of an understatement to say that without this series I wouldn’t be doing this today.

The character was built using Sandbert with Custom AI as a template though the AI has been tweaked to work with Bewear’s moveset specifically.
