Description:
Plants shouldn’t eat zombies who eat plants. Except Chomper. Dude needs the fiber.

Completely regrown and replanted from the ground up, just to burrow back into the ground! Chomper from Plants vs Zombies (PVZ) returns to Rivals of Aether.

Chomper is large character who is a bit sluggish in terms of speed and frame data, however they have a bit of disjointed range, and can be somewhat slippery to hit for their size. Chomper excels at staying just out of range of their opponent, poking at them with their tongue, and punishing whiffs with their more powerful moves once the chance arrives.

Training Mode Cheats

Chomper has quite a couple of moves with timers of sort. When going into training mode, using the Munophone cheats to remove cooldowns would be a good way to see what all the specials do more consistently.

Grounded Attacks

Jab
A single hit bite that can be charged up just like a strong attack.

FTilt
A long range tongue whip that yanks opponents in close upon hit. Can be canceled directly into other tilts on hit. Holding STRONG at the end lets Chomper spit a projectile afterward, regardless of whether the swing connected.

UTilt
A massive upward head swing. If opponents are struck by the very tip of Chomper’s horn at the end of the arc, they are sent flying directly behind them.

DTilt
A quick, multi-hit leaf attack that sweeps low to the ground. If Chomper has been crouching for at least 9 frames prior to activation, the startup time is massively reduced. And the move is already decently fast.

DAttack
A sprint forward that can be held down to continue traveling across the stage and even off ledges. Chomper bites forward upon releasing ATTACK, leaving a slightly lingering hitbox if performed on the ground and still sliding.

FStrong
A tongue stab that grabs enemies and throws them back into a devastating bite. Breaks through the opponent’s super armor if the tongue strikes them from behind.

UStrong
A massive upward bite with a multi-hit hitbox while charging, which can be canceled out by holding SHIELD. Fully charging without canceling results in a faster bite release, while semi charges without canceling are slower. Canceling the charging hitbox at the start acts as the middle ground between the two.

DStrong
Chomper slams their head violently into the dirt, burying any grounded opponents on the way down before pulling and swiping their head back in a wide arc. The size of the swing arc slightly changes depending on if there is a solid floor directly in front of Chomper when starting the move.

Aerial Attacks

NAir
A full 360 degree tongue swing that launches enemies at different angles depending on when they are hit.

UAir
A lingering tongue flick. If it connects with an enemy, Chomper pulls themselves toward the target for an upward bite.

FAir
A slow, heavy tongue swipe carrying a bucket at the tip. The bucket acts as a sweetspot, dealing massive damage and heavy knockback compared to the tongue.

DAir
Chomper spews a massive cloud of gas downward, providing a slight upward boost to themself.

BAir
A quick, slightly lingering stem thrust straight behind them.

Special Attacks

NSpecial (Tangleweed)
Spits out a Tangleweed in an arc. Holding SHIELD fires it downward, while holding SPECIAL allows it to pass directly through solid platforms. Once it settles, it burrows into the stage, and can not be hit until reactivated.

Activating the move a second time triggers a massive upward grab that pulls opponents straight down, setting up a punish.

Can be activated at any time, even during other attacks by pressing SPECIAL, as long as Chomper is not in hitstun. If already doing another special, press TAUNT instead.

Normally has a cooldown after being used or destroyed, but using FSpecial and using the pummel will instantly restore NSpecial, even allowing for an extra one to be stored if a Tangleweed is already active.

FSpecial (Chomp)
Chomper opens wide and swallows any opponent immediately in front of them, allowing them to walk around while carrying the enemy. The duration of the carry scales based on the victim’s current damage percentage.
While holding an opponent, Chomper has 4 options:

Forward: Spits them out directly ahead.

Upward: Spits them upward and fires a projectile after that can be angled.

Backward: A slow, powerful suplex that sends the opponent downward if used mid air.

Downward/Neutral: Chomper chews the opponent, instantly restoring NSpecial. Can be used multiple times if the opponent is at a high enough percent.

DSpecial (Burrow)
Chomper burrows completely into the ground, gaining total invulnerability while moving freely across the stage to reposition or escape tight corners.

Releasing SPECIAL unleashes a massive bite from below.

Pressing SHIELD allows for a faster exit without attacking.

While clinging to a wall with a full burrow meter, pressing SPECIAL and holding toward the wall lets Chomper travel up the terrain and emerge at the top. This can also be performed on ceilings during USpecial by pressing SHIELD.

Cooldown is refilled only when standing on solid ground.

USpecial (Jetpack)
A quick jetpack blast upwards. Holding SPECIAL redirects the momentum horizontally, while holding DOWN hovers directly in place. Chomper can cancel this move into any aerial attack, though there is a brief transition window where getting hit will put the move on cooldown.

Chomper Compatibility

Chomper’s FSpecial Grab has a unique sprite for all base cast characters while being held. To give your character a unique sprite as well, first make the sprite. It can be a single image, or animated, either works.

Then once you have the sprite in your sprites folder. Go to your character’s init.gml file, and enter the following somewhere within the file;

chomper_grab_sprite = sprite_get("[name of your sprite here]");

This sprite below can be used as a reference, Chomper’s lip line. It’s that small, no need to scale your sprites either.

Chomper has built in compatibility with Sandbert, Guadua, Sunflower, Peashooter, Ghost Pepper, Melon-Pult, and Infected.

Compatible with:

Final Smash, Miiverse, Mt.Dedede Stadium, Boxing Ring, Palutena’s Guidance

Chomper will eventually have all of the compatibilities the original Chomper had.
