Bench with flowers
In many cities of the Soviet Union, apartments were small and often overcrowded. As a result, part of social life shifted outdoors:
elderly people would sit there for hours,
neighbors talked with each other,
children played within sight,
teenagers met there in the evenings,
residents watched who came and went.
The “bench in front of the building” was almost a kind of semi-public living space.
