Description:

READ DESCRIPTION Fixed and improved implementation of particle impact effects that were intended to be included in EP2.

This addon will not work when enabled on the Workshop menu (blame Valve)

To enable create a text file called "autoexec.cfg" in the hl2_complete/cfg/ folder and add the line

cl_new_impact_effects 1

You will need to either extract this workshop addon or download the files via GameBanana[gamebanana.com] and extract the files to

steamapps/common/Half-Life 2/hl2_complete

(so that the directory looks like hl2_complete/materials and hl2_complete/particles)

This comes as part of the "HL2 Unified Anniversary Collection" bringing over the improvements from EP1 and EP2 into one unified package while expanding upon this with "Vanilla+" additions and cut content restoration wherever relevant.

These particles are sourced largely from EP2, TF2, L4D / CSGO. Particle impact effects replace the hard coded sprite effects of the original game and have the advantage of offering increased detail and higher resolution assets (the old sprite based effects have the advantage of colouring the impact effects based on the texture hit)
Particle impact effects were intended to be used in EP2 but weren’t finished / caused performance issues or something so it didn’t end up getting used. Despite this, the file had been sitting in the game files but still going unused and barely functioning. This addon fixes the related issues and restores this missing content. The large amount of smoke particles can cause some performance issues (wow it’s just like you’re playing CS2!)

Note that the video also shows some additional unique impact effects (rock, gravel, rubber, cardboard, etc) however you will not be able to use them as they require additional engine code edits. They will instead use corresponding HL2 fallbacks (grass–>dirt, rock–>concrete, etc)
