The T-72M2 Moderna is a Slovak modernization of the Soviet T-72 main battle tank, first unveiled in the early 1990s. Developed by ZTS Dubnica, it was designed to improve the firepower, protection, and battlefield awareness of the original T-72. The tank features a new VEGA fire control system, thermal imaging sights, a more powerful engine, and advanced DYNAS explosive reactive armor.
One of the most distinctive features of the T-72M2 Moderna is its externally mounted 30 mm 2A42 autocannon, which provides additional firepower against light armored vehicles and low-flying targets. Although the project demonstrated impressive capabilities for its time, it remained a prototype and was never adopted for large-scale service.
