Description:
Papal Bloodlines: Playable Pope

Ever wanted to play as the Pope in Crusader Kings III and turn the Holy See into a true family power base?

This mod allows you to play as the Catholic Pope in 867, 1066, or 1178, while adding a special dynasty-focused path built around secret papal heirs, legitimized children, and administrative family politics.

This mod will require the Roads to Power DLC

Main Features

  • Play as the Pope in 867, 1066, or 1178.
  • Special Papal Decision that lets your children become Legitimized Bastards.
  • Your family can enter the Administrative Government system.
  • The Pope receives the Monk trait after taking the decision.
  • Create a Duchy Title to unlock access to title heirs and your estate.
  • Land your heirs to secure your family’s future.
  • If the Papacy is not your primary title, you may grant the Papacy title to an heir if you want to continue as a different family member.
  • Papal succession remains Theocratic, keeping the Pope title unique and unstable.
  • Male and female heirs can still press claims on the Papacy.
  • New Admin Family Interaction allowing you to create cadet branches from your heirs.
  • Turn non-lowborn courtiers into administrative vassals through a special interaction.

How It Works

Start as the Catholic Pope in one of the supported bookmarks. Once in game, take the special decision to begin forming your hidden papal bloodline.

Your children will become legitimized bastards, representing the controversial reality that some medieval popes and church figures were accused of having children despite vows of celibacy. From there, you can build a powerful administrative family, create branches, land your heirs, and fight to keep influence over Rome.

Gameplay Notes

  • The Papacy still uses theocratic succession.
  • Your dynasty does not automatically inherit the Papacy normally.
  • You will need to use claims, land grants, family management, and political strategy to keep your bloodline powerful.
  • Creating a duchy is important because it gives you access to title heir mechanics and your estate.
  • This mod is meant to be a semi-historical alternate gameplay path, not a fully historical papal simulator.

Recommended Playstyle

Build your papal dynasty in secret, create strong cadet branches, land loyal family members, and decide whether your house will serve the Church… or control it from behind the throne.

Become the Pope. Build a bloodline. Claim the Keys of Saint Peter.
