Edo Castle (World Wonder)
– Tokugawa Ieyasu
The history of Edo Castle dates back to Hirayama Castle built in 1457. In 1590, Tokugawa Ieyasu took control of the Kantō region and made Edo his residence. After unifying Japan, he expanded the castle on multiple occasions. Edo Castle became the residence of the Tokugawa shōguns served as the center of power for the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for 265 years. The Tokugawa shogunate ultimately came to an end amid the upheaval of the Meiji Restoration. In 1868, the last Tokugawa shogun returned political power to Emperor Meiji and vacated Edo Castle. Three years later, Edo Castle became the Emperor’s residence and was renamed the Imperial Palace in 1948, though its boundaries differ from those of the Edo period.
Japan has an unbroken imperial lineage, but for a long period in history, the supreme leader of the samurai government was the Sei-i Taishōgun (aka Shōgun). In 1192, after Minamoto no Yoritomo defeated the Taira clan and the Ōshū Fujiwara clan, he assumed the title of Sei-i Taishōgun and established the Kamakura Shogunate, effectively seizing control of Japan’s military and political power. The subsequent Muromachi Shogunate followed this precedent until power shifted elsewhere, and Japan entered the Warring States period, a time of feudal lords’ fragmentation. After Tokugawa Ieyasu eliminated all resistance and unified Japan, he became Shōgun in 1603, established the Tokugawa Shogunate, and enacted the “Buke-Shohatto” (Laws of Military Households) to control the various domains and fiefs. The Tokugawa shōguns ruled Japan for 265 years until their reign came to an end amid the Meiji Restoration; in 1868, the last Tokugawa shōgun returned political power to Emperor Meiji.
The Atakemaru was a large ship built by order of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Shōgun of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The ship was based on the Atakefune military ships, and with its colossal hull and extravagant design, it was a symbol of the Shōgun’s immense financial and military powers.
