Description:
Mare Nostrum: Ante Revolutio

This is a large-scale alternate history timeline mod starting in 1762.

In this world, the Mediterranean has never lost its central position. Aragon has become the hegemon of the western Mediterranean through centuries of expansion, the Crusader kingdoms have firmly established themselves in Egypt and the Holy Land, the Holy Roman Empire is controlled by a Wendish ruling class from the Baltic, and the Afsharid conqueror Nader Shah once swept across the Near East, only to be halted under the walls of Jerusalem.

The revival of the old trade routes has reconnected the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Far East, sending spices, gold, and colonial wealth flowing to Europe; meanwhile, Enlightenment ideas, religious reform, nationalism, and revolutionary waves are shaking the old order. Kings still sit on their thrones, but the world beneath their feet is beginning to burn.

Recommended Playable Nations

Kingdom of Aragon
The hegemon of the western Mediterranean stands on the eve of revolution. You can try to save the kingdom through reform, suppress the revolution, or let the old regime end in fire.

Holy Roman Empire
Empress Sophia has just seized the throne, attempting to consolidate the empire through enlightened absolutism. But German peasants and nationalists are still building up anger under Wendish chains; the empire may be reborn or fall into fragmentation.

Afsharid Dynasty
After the failure at Jerusalem, Nader Shah’s empire has become unstable. Heirs, regents, governors, and external enemies are all waiting for opportunities. You can pacify the civil war, rebuild the empire, and complete the unfinished cause of conquering the Holy City and Constantinople.

Overseas Empire (Crusader States)
The Crusader kingdoms have accumulated wealth in the Holy Land and Eastern trade, but they are also shaken by wars and the pressure of ruling over infidels. Rebuild the state, defend the Holy City, and determine the future of this crusader kingdom.

Kingdom of Italy
The Sforza dynasty expelled the Pope, unified most of the Apennine Peninsula, and rose through eastern colonisation. Now, Italy needs to reassert its dominance over the eastern Mediterranean.

Normandy
The Angevin dynasty has long ruled both France and England, but the Anglo-Saxons in northern England have not been truly integrated. You must deal with the complex situation of assimilation, rebellion, and the French throne.

Tawantinsuyu
The Andean empire that once defeated European invaders has declined due to the Little Ice Age and internal divisions. The suyus are each acting independently, and the royal authority in Cusco is no longer supreme. A new unifier will emerge from the cracks.

Avalon Colonial Powers
The vast hinterland of Avalon in the northern New World remains unexplored. Colonists, missionaries, officers, companies, and local powers will compete for land, wealth, and the future here.

World Themes

  • The Reformation has fragmented Catholic Europe, with new heresies and Protestant sects spreading across Europe, India, East Asia, and the New World.
  • Old trade routes and colonial commerce have brought wealth, but also war, slavery, missionary work, and colonial conflicts.
  • Enlightenment ideas are challenging absolute monarchs, and revolution is no longer a distant theory.
  • The great empires appear strong, but all harbour succession crises, ethnic tensions, fiscal pressures, and social unrest.

Notes

This mod is still under active development; content for some countries and regions will be supplemented in later versions. The current version focuses on the major powers, regional crises, the initial world situation, and core gameplay experience.
