HISTORY

The Battle of Iwo Jima (February 19 – March 26, 1945) was a major engagement in which Allied forces (comprising primarily members of the United States Marine Corps) landed and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. The American invasion, codenamed Operation Detachment, aimed to capture the island, including its three airfields, with the goal of using the region as a base for launching more effective attacks on the Japanese main islands.[1] The fighting, predicted by planners to last less than a week, lasted thirty-five days, becoming one of the fiercest and bloodiest battles of the Pacific War. Controversially, despite being a resounding victory for the American armed forces, the importance and strategic value of the capture of the island to the Allied war effort remains a matter of debate. Iwo Jima would never be used by the United States Army as a staging base, nor would the Navy use it as a naval base.[2]

The Japanese Army made extensive preparations in anticipation of the American invasion. They filled the island with fortified positions, bunkers, pillboxes, and hidden artillery pieces, nearly all interconnected by nearly 18 kilometers of newly constructed tunnels.[3][4] The American invasion force was protected by the extensive power of its naval artillery and complete air superiority provided by the aviators of the United States Navy and Army Air Forces.[5] Overall, the Americans had a massive superiority in numbers, resources, and technology. The Japanese, who had been on the defensive since 1943, lacked supplies and well-trained troops (in addition to being on an island, which made it impossible for them to receive supplies or reinforcements), making their chances of victory virtually nil. Thus, General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (commander of the Japanese forces on the island) had to adapt his strategy to this reality, determined to inflict maximum losses on the enemy and die fighting.[6]

Both sides suffered heavy losses. Although the number of Japanese soldiers killed was nearly three times that of the Americans, the total casualties (combined dead and wounded) suffered by the Americans exceeded those of the Japanese, for the first and only time in the Pacific.[7] Of the 21,000 Japanese troops garrisoned on Iwo Jima at the beginning of the battle, only 216 were taken prisoner.[8] Another 18,000 were killed, and at least 3,000 remained for weeks after the island was declared secure, fighting guerrilla warfare, hiding in its tunnels, and harassing the American occupation forces. By the end of the war, however, Iwo Jima was completely secure. Still, Japanese remnants remained, with the last Japanese military surrendering only in 1949.[8][9]
