Description:

UBOAT has always simulated the thermal layer: below it, enemy sonar and hydrophones lose up to 90% of their power. But you were never told about it – no report, no indicator, nothing. And the layer sat at 186–282 meters, deeper than most boats can survive. A good mechanic, but barely can be used and with unrealistic numbers. This mod finishes what the developers started.

What it does
  • Your crew tells you about the thermal layer. Cross it with a manned hydrophone station and the operator calls it out – in his own voice, with whisper variants for silent running, subtitles in 6 languages, and an entry in the events log.
  • Unique voice-overs made just for this mod. Brand-new hydrophone-operator lines in the crew’s own German voices – created specially for this mod. (German voice-overs only; every other language still gets full subtitles.)
  • A native status icon with a live tactical tooltip. While submerged, a layer indicator sits among the vanilla notifications. Hover it: measured layer depth, how old the reading is, whether you are above or below, and your current acoustic shadow in % – computed with the game’s own formula.
  • Realistic layer depth (default on). The seasonal thermal layer moves to its historical 25-150 m – colder waters deeper, warmer shallower – so every boat from a Type II to a Type IX can actually use it, the way real skippers did. Prefer the untouched vanilla depths (I don’t know why you should)? One config switch, and the mod becomes pure visualization.
  • Earn the knowledge. Water temperature gives your crew a rough estimate. The exact depth must be measured by diving through the layer – and the measurement goes stale after a few hours, because the layer drifts. Dive deep, learn, use it, repeat.

How it plays

Escorts hunting you? Get under the layer and their ASDIC pings fade – combine it with silent running and slip away. The mod changes NO detection code: it only makes the layer reachable and visible.

Compatibility
  • Save-game friendly: adds nothing to save files; safe to add or remove mid-campaign.
  • No detection/AI code patched. This will be a separeted mod (soon).
  • For UBOAT 2026.1.
