Japan Restored

First mod. I’m not a programmer.

Japan / the Sengoku Jidai situation are simply broken in vanilla

Feedback welcome; bugs especially.

Japan unification chain (Sengoku → Shōgun → Empire of Japan)
  • Phantom sweep — Territoryless Shogunate IO members are annexed and their units destroyed one month after Sengoku starts.
  • End-condition fallback — If Sengoku resolves with no winner, the strongest Japanese-culture country with land becomes Japan automatically.
  • Owning Kyōto auto-promotes you to Shogun — capital moves, rank → Empire, reforms swap from Daimyō / Japanese Clan to Shogunate, "By Right of Kyōto" event explains it.
  • Triggered the instant peace is signed — no monthly-tick wait. Monthly fallback catches edge cases.
  • Imperial Marriage chain — heir is married to a freshly-created Yamato character on ascension; monthly keeper re-pairs if either dies.
  • Succession transformation — when the Shōgun dies and the Yamato-married heir takes the throne, "The Sun Rises Over a New Japan" fires: true tag change to ♥♥♥ via form_country, Imperial Family reform replaces yours, +20 stability.
  • Map title fix — overrides vanilla’s "Great Japanese Court" suffix to "Great Japanese Empire".
  • Ascender protection — if you’ve already ascended via Kyōto, Sengoku-end branches skip ♥♥♥ form so the heir-marriage narrative is preserved.

Samurai unit + Dojo system

A Japanese-Shinto special-unit chain modeled on the Ottoman janissaries, but employing nobles instead of slaves and scaling per age through a dedicated dojo building tree.

  • Six samurai unit tiers, one per age (Traditions → Renaissance → Discovery → Reformation → Absolutism → Revolutions), auto-upgrading at age boundaries.
  • Six chained Samurai Dojo tiers — noble-estate buildings (town/city only), each newer tier obsoletes the previous.
  • Tech-tree integration — building advance + unit advance per age, gated on a vanilla per-age prereq.
  • Auto-grant at game start — Japanese-culture-group countries practising Shinto get Age 1 dojo + unit advances pre-completed.
  • Recruitment cap: 2 + total dojo levels in your realm.
  • Custom red row tint in the army panel so samurai stand out from brown-tinted Footmen.
  • Currently shipping with broken-for-test stats — will balance down once enough playthroughs identify the right values.

Hidden formables surfaced
  • Vanilla locks several formable empire tags behind always = no #Formed by event. Currently surfaced with culture-group filters: TUR_f, YUA_f, DAH_f, MLC_f.
  • Six more (AYU, BAH, GLD, PGR, MTM, CSH) on the to-do list.

Quality of life
  • Yearly auto-marry of unmarried adult courtiers — player country only; pairs only EXISTING same-culture / same-religion characters, never fabricates spouses; excludes eligible heirs and mercenary leaders.
  • Government reform timing fix — vanilla shogunate and japanese_imperial_family reforms used years = 2 (effects scaled 0% → 100% over two years); override sets years = 0 so the full effect applies immediately.

UI fixes
  • Build Castles in Province Capitals — one-click castle network across all owned province capitals.
  • Upgrade All Castles — mass-upgrade companion.
  • Minting auto-toggle — adds the missing automation button to the Minting row in the Economy panel.
  • Outliner per-unit-category icons — proper unit-type icons in Current Armies / Navies rows instead of generic squares.
  • Outliner section headers — total army strength next to stack count; total ships in Current Navies.
  • Coalition target alert — "Close to being target of IO" tooltip sorts countries into high/medium/low army-size buckets.

Event Almanac (Hints panel)

A handcrafted catalogue of major flavor events for the country you’re playing — fires-when, per-option outcomes, recommended pick. Filtered by player tag, culture group and capital region.

  • Authored so far: How to form Japan, Ashikaga Foundation (1336–1360), Kannō Disturbance, Kanrei Council formation, Ashikaga Legitimization, Muromachi Cultural Flowering, Kirishitan, Kakitsu Treaty, William Adams, Sakoku Law, Gokaidō Highway System, Buke Shohatto, Rangaku, Late Edo arc, Sengoku Jidai + Nanbokuchō Jidai walkthroughs.
  • Planned next: rewrite as a proper interactive Events panel with live trigger checklists.

Compatibility
  • Patch baseline — 1.1 "Rossbach" series (1.1.10, March 2026). 1.2 "Echinades" expected May 2026 — re-test after release.
  • Save-safe — most features apply on game start; mid-save loading should be safe.
  • Achievements — likely incompatible with Ironman (typical for any balance mod).
  • Full-file overrides (other mods touching these will conflict): outliner_entries.gui, alertmanager.gui, build_location_lateralview.gui, economy_lateralview.gui, 00_formable_countries.txt, country_monthly.txt, situations/sengoku.txt.

Known issues
  • Samurai stats are intentionally over-tuned for testing.
  • Mid-campaign Shinto converts don’t get the Age 1 samurai auto-grant (only fires at campaign start).
  • Imperial Family reform may be removed by the engine in edge cases (its locked block requires a Yamato ruler).
  • Building-based countries can’t form formables in the UI — vanilla limitation; the Shōgun chain handles this from script.
