Sapporo Municipal Subway 8000 Series / 札幌市交通局8000形
The 8000 Series (8000形) is a rubber-tired metro train operated by Sapporo Municipal Subway on the Tozai Line.
Introduced in preparation of the Tozai Line’s extension in 1999, the 8000 series was designed to increase capacity on the network. Compatible equipment from the retiring 6000 series was reused to reduce production costs, a common practice in Sapporo. Initially operating as 7-car sets, the type was planned to be extended to 9 cars as demand rose, but this was abandoned as Japan’s population stagnated in the early 2000s. A total of 168 cars was produced from 1998-2008, all currently in service on the Tozai Line.
