Netherlands Flavor Pack
Once masters of the seas, the Dutch must reclaim their Golden Age, or fade into irrelevance.
In 1836, the Netherlands stands diminished. The secession of Belgium has shaken the kingdom to its core, and the vast colonial empire that once made the Dutch the envy of Europe now belongs to history. But history is not destiny.
This mod adds a comprehensive historical flavour experience for the Netherlands, letting you rebuild the Dutch Empire from its Golden Age roots.
A new journal entry chain tasks you with restoring Dutch colonial dominion across both hemispheres. Declare your imperial ambitions, draw up the old charters, and watch the great powers take notice.
Western Colonies:
- New Netherland: Reclaim New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut. Nieuw-Amsterdam rises again.
- New Holland: Restore the Dutch foothold in Brazil’s northeast, centered on Mauritsstad.
- Dutch West Indies: Reassert control over the Caribbean and Guayana.
Eastern Colonies:
- Dutch Cape Colony: Secure the gateway to the Far East at Kaapstad.
- Dutch India: Re-establish the Coromandel and Malabar trading networks.
- Dutch Ceylon: Reclaim the jewel of the spice trade.
- Dutch Formosa: Extend Dutch reach to the Far East.
A full event chain around the draining and reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer, the inland lake that today is best known as the home of Schiphol Airport. The chain spans ten historical events, opening with the Christmas storms of 1836 that caused catastrophic flooding around Amsterdam and Leiden, and closing with the official establishment of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer in 1855. Among the events are King Willem I’s royal decree, the parliamentary funding debate, the commissioning of De Cruquius – at the time the largest steam engine ever built – and more.
When establishing each colony, choose how it will be governed, a decision with lasting mechanical and political consequences.
- Colony of Extraction: Authoritarian rule maximising resource throughput. The local population bears the cost.
- Colony of Commerce: Mercantile governance focused on trade advantage, capital accumulation and commercial growth.
- Colony of Liberalism: Progressive administration with public education, broader civic rights and migration incentives, a model of Dutch Enlightenment values abroad.
Each model sets a full package of laws, installs a government matching its ideology, and applies a unique permanent modifier to the colonial nation.
Six unique Dutch companies are available, each rooted in real history. Technology requirements, building types and modifiers have been carefully selected to try and closely match each company’s founding date, actual role in Dutch power projection and industrial development.
- Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij: Founded by King William I in 1824 to revive Dutch trade after the Napoleonic era, the NHM became the backbone of colonial commerce and the primary conduit for East Indies revenues. Active from the start of the game.
- Fijenoord: Established in Rotterdam in 1823, the Fijenoord shipyard was among the oldest and most important in the Netherlands, building both commercial vessels and warships that kept Dutch sea power alive through the industrial age.
- Werkspoor-Stork: Werkspoor, founded in 1827 in Amsterdam, built much of the Netherlands’ railway rolling stock, bridges, and marine diesel engines, while Stork, established in 1868 in Hengelo, supplied the machinery that powered the Dutch textile industry and remained at the frontier of Dutch engineering innovation throughout the industrial era. Their overlapping expertise in heavy engineering and Stork’s eventual acquisition of Werkspoor in 1891 made them a natural fit as a single company in-game, representing the full breadth of Dutch industrial engineering within Victoria 3’s company slot constraints.
- Heineken: Founded in Amsterdam in 1864 by Gerard Adriaan Heineken, the brewery grew from a single Amsterdam pub into a global export brand and one of the Netherlands’ most recognisable industrial success stories.
- Stoomvaart-Maatschappij Nederland: Established in 1870 to connect Amsterdam with the Dutch East Indies by steamship, the SMN was central to Dutch maritime dominance in the late 19th century.
- Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken: The Royal Dutch Steel Mills, founded in 1918 at IJmuiden, became the industrial backbone of the Dutch economy and one of Europe’s great steel producers.
Flavour events bring key moments in Dutch 19th-century history to life:
- The opening of Artis Zoo
- The opening of the first railway in Holland
- The opening of the Rijksmuseum building
Active from game start, this treaty with Prussia is based on the historical Convention of Mainz regulating navigation on the Rhine. The Netherlands receives iron, while Prussia receives coffee, sugar and dye flowing through the port of Rotterdam, along with bilateral trade privileges reflecting the easier movement of goods with the rapidly industrialising Ruhr area.
When Dutch culture nations control historical Dutch colonial territories; states and hubs take their period-accurate Dutch names.
This mod is actively in development. Planned additions include:
- The Cultivation System: The Dutch East Indies’ forced cultivation system is currently represented by two simple modifiers, but it deserves far more. At its peak it accounted for roughly 50% of Dutch state revenue, extracted at enormous cost to the local population. The goal is a full journal covering its implementation, economic consequences, and the growing political pressure at home to abolish it.
- The Dutch East Indies: A dedicated journal covering the consolidation of Dutch control over Indonesia, from the Bali expeditions to the ferocious Aceh War.
- Historical Events: Flavour events covering key moments in Dutch 19th-century history, from domestic politics and royal succession to industrial transformation and colonial crisis.
- Early Game Expansion: New journals, decisions and events to fill the early game before the Netherlands is in a position to pursue great power status, giving the formative years more depth and direction.
Feedback and suggestions are welcome. If there’s a piece of Dutch history you’d like to see represented, leave a comment below.
