Description:

The 3000 Series (3000系) is an EMU operated by Fukuoka City Subway on the Nanakuma Line.

The inaugural type for Fukuoka Subway’s newest line, the 3000 series differ significantly from the operator’s previous fleet. The type runs on the standard gauge Nanakuma Line as opposed to the 1067mm narrow gauge used on the rest of Fukuoka Subway, linear motors are also used for the type instead of conventional propulsion. Introduced in 2005, 68 cars were produced initially, with an additional 16 ‘3000A’ cars ordered for the line’s extension in 2022, bringing the total up to 84 cars. All sets operate as 4-car formations, although a future extension to 6-cars is planned should the need for greater capacity arise. German designer Alexander Neumeister was in charge of the 3000 series’ exterior, well-known for his work on ICE types and the 500 series Shinkansen.
