AGOT: All Men Must Serve
Valar morghulis, the Braavosi say in greeting. All men must die. The answer comes back just as sure: valar dohaeris. All men must serve.
All Men Must Serve lets you send a landless son across the narrow sea to take up with one of the free companies, and make, or lose, his fortune far from home.
Send a landless son of age, not yet a ruler in his own right, across the narrow sea, and choose which company will have him: the Golden Company, the Second Sons, the Windblown, the Stormcrows, the Company of the Cat, and more than a dozen others besides. Each has its own captain, its own standing, and its own fortunes of war. Not every captain will take him. Some have no room. Some have no love for strangers. Some are already at war with whoever sends him.
Not every man waits to be sent. A landless son who would rather choose his own fate than have one chosen for him can seek out a free company on his own account, with no ruler’s word needed. His liege may think less of him for leaving unbidden, but a man with nothing to lose has little reason to ask permission first.
Once he has found a company, his story is his own to live. The years abroad bring coin, renown, and the rough camaraderie of men who have marched the same roads. They also bring risk: a wound that aches for years, or worse. A company at war is no safe place, and the narrow sea does not send every man home.
What war makes of a man is not always for the worse. Some come back scarred in ways no wound can show, haunted by what they did and saw, carrying it with them the rest of their days, a mark that only deepens if the horrors keep coming. Others come back changed for the better instead, tempered by the same fire, steadier and prouder than the boy who left, a mark that can deepen just as far if he keeps proving himself. Whichever the narrow sea makes of him, it does not undo the other. A man’s service settles him one way or the other, for good.
Recall him whenever you choose, or leave him be and let him find his own way back in time. A son who serves a real tour, long enough for Essos to leave its mark, returns a Mercenary Veteran, hardened by years no soft life at home could have given him. Call him home too early, before that mark can be made, and he comes back unchanged, free to be sent out again whenever you wish. Earn the name once, though, and that chapter of his life is closed for good.
By some rare turn of blood, a son who serves faithfully enough, and long enough, might even find himself named captain in his company’s stead. No man plans for it, and fewer still will ever see it happen.
