# ITS Caio Duilio (C 554) – Post-1980 Training Cruiser
ITS Caio Duilio (C 554), the second Andrea Doria-class helicopter cruiser of the Italian Navy, was converted into a dedicated cadet training ship from 1979 to 1980 for Livorno Naval Academy midshipmen.
Major modifications repurposed the large rear helicopter hangar into classrooms and student quarters, cut its helicopter capacity from four to two AB 212s, and removed two aft 76mm gun mounts to expand living space. Its core SM-1ER air defense missiles, forward main guns and full sensor suites were retained to offer trainees authentic combat system experience.
Relocated to La Spezia after refit, the vessel undertook long-distance training cruises across the Atlantic, Americas and Pacific throughout the 1980s, combining navigation drills, port visits and NATO exercises. It served as Italy’s main training cruiser until decommissioning in late 1989 and scrapping in 1992.
