Skins for E 499.3/ES 499.1
ČSD Class ES 499.1 is a class of electric locomotives used primarily for passenger trains in Czech Republic and Slovakia. First prototype was build in 1980. ES 499.1 locomotives operate both on the 3 kV DC system and the 25 kV 50 Hz AC system. Class E 499.3 (today 163) is derived from ES 499.1 (today 363), but only operates on 3kV DC. 363s are numerically the largest class of ČD locomotives.
There are also variants with higher speed limits or other AC systems. Today’s class 162, 163, 263, 363, 362, 371, 372.
In 1980, these locomotives were the world’s first multisystem locomotives with power thyristor pulse regulation. This regulation has minimal losses compared to older resistive regulation with much higher losses. This gave the locomotive its characteristic sound in three frequencies (the first is 33,3 Hz, the second is 100 Hz and the third is 300 Hz) when locomotive accelerating.
Class 163/162 is nicknamed ‘Peršing’. This came into being when the locomotive was put into operation when the machines had a high failure rate (‘short range’) but high acceleration (‘quick start’), making them similar to Pershing II missiles deployed throughout Western Europe in the 1980s.
