The year is AD 457. Since the Roman Empire’s division in AD 395, the Western Roman Empire has been in steep decline due to barbarian invasions, economic decline and incompetent governance.
The story of the barbarian invasion of the Roman Empire is as follows: The Goths were the first to seek refuge in Roman lands, defeating their merciless Roman hosts at the battle of Adrianople in AD 378. The Goths then proceeded to sack the city of Rome in AD 410, with the Gothic horde settling in the provinces of Hispania and southern Gaul. The Goths were followed in their assault on the Roman empire by tribes of Suebi, Vandals and Alans who migrated en-masse across the frozen Rhine River in AD 406. They proceeded to migrate into the Gallic, Hispanic and African provinces of the Western Roman Empire. Then, when it came to the clash between the two great European Empires of the time, Roman and Hunnic, at the Battle of Chalons in AD 451, Rome proved itself the superior power of the two.
Atilla, disheartened at his defeat then made his way for a suicidal assault on Italy that was doomed to fail, due to the sheer centralisation of nearly all Roman Imperial Forces in province of Italy. Atilla had already expended his treasury mustering every last man he could to fight the Roman coalition at the Battle of Chalons and lost. Atilla’s army was nothing more. However, the Western Roman Empire suffered from a lack of respite as the Vandals sacked the city of Rome in AD 455.
The year now is AD 457, and a new emperor has ascended to the throne of the Western Roman Empire, his name is Julius Valerius Majorian. He is an ambitious emperor who seeks to retake the former territories of the Western Roman Empire from the newly formed barbarian kingdoms. Will he succeed in restoring greatness and glory to Rome ?…or will Majorian simply be another footnote in history ?…time shall reveal all.
