Boeing B-17g Flying Fortress "Thunderbird" (Draegast’d)
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a large heavy bomber introduced in 1938. It became the third most produced bomber of all time, with close to 13,000 units built before they were retired in 1968. They played a major role in the European Theater in the war with Germany, and also served in the Pacific. B-17s were used extensively by both the US Air Force and the RAF. Their name, the Flying Fortress came from its extensive defensive armaments it carried. It had a dorsal turret, ventral ball turret, waist gunners, and nose and tail gunners. G models had a chin turret fitted to the front. Post war, the B-17 was used for various other roles such as research, rescue, cargo, and target practice. Today, fewer than a dozen still fly.
