Description:

It is recommended (but not required) that you use "low" simulation detail to increase performance when using the Class 09. However the shunter has been tested and works reliably at full sim detail.

My build of a Class 09 Shunter in Railfreight Grey livery.

This shunter can achieve a maximum of 20mph and has two large diesel engines geared for torque. In the screenshots you can see it pulling two Class 37 locomotives as well as 10 fully loaded coal wagons (65000 coal!) and it was able to achieve 14-15 mph.

It has a fuel tank of 1100 litres, brake and battery isolation switches, heater, track switcher, independent marker lights, basic emergency equipment, a horn, dual controls (drive from either seat) and portable tail lights for stabling purposes.

Track Switcher:

Default frequency is 440, can override via the keypad in the cab if needed. Set the override to 0 to use the default of 440.

Marker Lights:

To use the external lighting you must first enable the marker lights switch inside the cab above the left side driver’s seat. Then exit the locomotive and below each marker light (four in total) there is a switch for that light only. This allows you to independently set each marker light as per the real Class 09.

Driver’s Controls:

Each seat has a reverser, throttle, and brake. These controls are only active when a driver is sitting in that seat AND the master key is on. If both seats are occupied the system will shut down and a warning light will be displayed on the driving desk as this will cause issues. The speedometer will automatically rotate if the right side driver’s seat is in use. Remember to set all controls to default (Brakes to 1, throttle and reverser to 0) before switching seats to prevent any issues.

If you leave the seat the brakes will fully apply, you must be sitting down to operate the loco.

Startup/Shutdown:

To start the loco simply activate the master key and hold the Engine Start button for a few seconds. To shut the loco down just disable the master key.

Stabling (Portable tail lights):

To prevent power loss when the loco is to sit for a while without use you can disable the batteries via two external circuit breakers (one on each side). Make sure both of these are off and then at each end of the loco there is a portable tail light, use the toggle button to turn this on in directions where trains can approach from. This ensures that in low visibility someone can see there is a train there even though the marker lights won’t have power.

Brakes:

There is no way to control my Class 37’s locomotive brakes with the Class 09, so if you are intending to drag one you need to isolate the 37’s brakes before moving. However the Class 09 does send a brake signal via the orange MU socket on composite number channel 10, so any of my wagons (such as the BR HAA Coal Hoppers) that use this system can be braked via the Class 09’s brake controller.

There is also a parking brake to the rear of the cab, make sure this is fully applied when shutting down the loco and fully released when the loco is in use.

External Connectivity:

Shore Supply socket on each side of the loco for recharging/jump starting the batteries.

Fuel fill point under the cab on the left side.

Power passthrough sockets on each end of the loco.

MU sockets on each end of the loco (for brake signals only).

Equipment:

4x Cables (left side external storage cabinet)
2x Welding Torch (right side external storage cabinet)
Fire Extinguisher (cab interior)
Handheld Radio (cab interior)
Flashlight (cab interior)
First Aid Kit (cab interior)
Thermal Clothing (cab interior)
Coupler Adaptor (right side external storage cabinet)
