JNR Series 401/421 EMU
Description
JNR Series 401/421 trains were Japan’s first EMUs compatible with both AC and DC, with production beginning in 1960. The basic structure of these two trains is almost the same, but the Series 401 is compatible with 1500V DC, 20kV 50Hz AC, and the Series 421 with 1500V DC, 20kV 60Hz AC, respectively, and the Series 401 was deployed on the Joban Line and the Series 421 on the Sanyo Main Line and Kagoshima Main Line.
