Description:

Historical Anglo Saxons was heavily inspired by Jamie Jeffer’s The British History Podcast. If you’re interested in a culturally focused deep-dive into the history of Britain, I’d very much recommend giving it a listen at https://www.thebritishhistorypodcast.com/

Briefly, this mod adds the following to the early 2 start dates.

New Bloodlines! Custom bloodlines now for Cerdic, Penda, Ida, Offa, and Hengest & Horsa.

Witan Succession
– A combination of tanistry and feudal elective succession types
– All vassals 2 levels down from the ruler can elect the successor
– Vassals have the vote preferences of feudal elective, but any dynastic character may be elected
– Additionally, the spouses of the current ruler may be elected (i.e. Aethelflaed, Lady of Mercia)

Map and Starting Troops
– All of Britain starts as tribal, with England being more developed than other parts
– This mimics the Fyrd system of troop recruitment
– To offset this, all starting rulers begin with a varying number of "retinue" heavy troops
– They do not cost anything to maintain, and reinforce at 20% the regular rate of retinues
– Additionally, being Tribal enables Anglo Saxon rulers to raid against the heathens in 867.
– The starting troops are not disbanded on inheritance
– The rulers of England now only control their capital counties, and have random vassals to control.

Crohn’s Disease
– The affliction of Alfred the Great is now modeled in CK2
– Works similarly to Gout, but is substantially less likely to happen to your character
– There is no cure, as it’s an autoimmune disease that is still outside the scope of modern medicine

Retinue and Buildings
– New Waerod retinue and cultural building
– Mixture of heavy infantry and pikemen

House of Wessex
– Æthelred now starts with a wife and 2 sons, Æthelhelm and Æthelwold
– Alfred now starts with his wife, Ealhswith

Note: since Alfred generally has the highest learning in Wessex in 867, he almost always starts as the successor to a bishop. This disqualifies him for selection under the Witan, so you have to nominate a different bishop’s successor in order to have him as an elector.

Future changes (I work a lot, so no promises on when they get implemented):
– Adding West Saxon, Mercian, Northumbrian, and Anglian cultures, that will melt into Anglo Saxon if there is a King of England with one of those cultures
– Disbanding the starting troops once a top liege converts to feudalism
