i know that steam pistons supposedly have their own internal valves but this should help your steam piston engine not slow down to a halt shortly after startup, it’s literally just 2 threshold blocks and a jk flip flop
no need to configure anything, just hook up the logic and place one for every piston in your engine, this should also work with pumps in place of valves
