Description:

The Smiler will marmalise your body, and mind…

The Smiler is the world’s first 14 looping roller coaster. Opened back in 2013, it was the first Infinity coaster to be produced by Gerstlauer, and currently is the only Infinity coaster to feature OTSR’s (Over the shoulder restraints) which can lead to headbanging. In the weeks leading up to the coasters planned opening date, many delays were hit, resulting in a later opening time. These included technical faults, construction problems and teething problems. It was eventually opened on the 31st of May. The Smiler had operated quite smooth into 2015 but that changed with the rides most infamous incident, seeing 2 girls loose their legs in a accident where two trains collided. The Smiler was closed throughout the 2015 season while the investigation continued into the accident. The cause of this accident was Human Error, which allowed the park to reopen The Smiler. The Smiler reopened for the 2016 season and has operated smoothly ever since.

When I made this recreation, I did not focus on the surrounding area. So, Oblivion, Enterprise and the surrounding area does not have the detail that the Smiler has.

This recreation of the ride took over 150 hours of work spread out across about 5 months, with every track piece, building and support put down 1:1 with the ride. To make this ride, I first split the layout into separate images and got the scale right, so every image and piece of track when placed on a 32m billboard would be to scale. I then began making the layout. I started at the station and made the stations pre drop and progressed through the first half. I then built some of the retaining walls and then started with the second half. As I was finishing the cobra roll, I made the brake run and transfer track, and then I made the two heartline rolls. I then finished the floor and retaining walls. The supports would go up next with the main dive loops supports going vertical first. I then finished most of the supports and started to make the marmaliser. After I had done a blank marmaliser with no effects I decided start the station and terraformed the ride into the ground. I then finished the station and began the final supports. After all of the supports were done I started the trees and started to detail the marmaliser. After that I detailed the station and then the ride was done.

This recreation is not perfect, but I got it to a level where all of my testers and myself was happy with. Here is a list of people I am thankful for helping shape this ride:

-FlareGFX
-charliedebnam
-operateur (who made the marmaliser screen possible, thank you!)
