-SS ATLANTIC HISTORY-
The SS Atlantic was a passenger steamer order by the White Star Line and later built by Harland and Wolf in 1870. She was one of the new Oceanic class liners for the Steamship line and would start her journey on her maiden voyage which took place on the 8th of June, 1871. The Oceanic class was fitted to carry steam engines as primary propulsion but due to this technology being uncommon during this era she was fitted with sails as a secondary means of propulsion to ease the worries of passengers sailing on these vessels. The Atlantic would sail only a handful of voyages after later, on April 1st 1873 she struck golden rule rock off the coast of Nova Scotia after diverting her voyage to refuel on coal due to a shortage. The disaster took around 535 souls and was one of the first major incidents for the White Star Line. Her wreckage was later scrapped and only some debris now lay around the wreck sight.
