Description:
Czechoslovak Gendarmerie

The Czechoslovak Gendarmerie was founded in 1918 by a rebirth of the gendarmerie of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and immediately became the primary armed security corps of the young democratic Czechoslovak Republic.

§ 1 of the Act on Gendarmerie states:

"The gendarmerie is a militarily organized guard corps, which is designed to maintain public order and public safety throughout the territory of the Czechoslovak Republic in accordance with existing legal regulations and regulations of the relevant state authorities."

It follows that the gendarmes, in addition to their departmental law enforcement and investigation services, stood guard at the borders of the republic in cases of its external threat. Both in 1921 against Hungary and from the autumn of 1938 to March 1939 against the Nazi Third Reich and Horthy’s Hungary.

In the ranks of the State Defense Corps, alongside members of the Financial Guard, uniformed police and military reservists, the gendarmes were the first in the way of the rage of Sudeten German terrorists. They were ambushed and murdered. They were besieged at their stations and lynched by the crowds of their fellow citizens. Nevertheless, not a single member of the gendarmerie betrayed his oath in the fateful days, weeks and months of the Munich Crisis and the struggle for Carpathian-Ruthenia. They all remained at their posts and fought for a free and democratic Czechoslovakia until the end.

From 28 October 1918 to the end of March 1939, 113 members of the gendarmerie fell in the service, 36 of them fell directly in defense of the republic between May 1938 and March 1939.
