There is an arguably better attempt to giving handgunners bayonets, complete with working animations. Check it out!

Well, here’s my attempt at creating two animations for handgunners. With this mod, Handgunners and their RoR and Elector Count State Troop counterparts will fight like spearmen and (for Surefires’ Handgunners) halberdiers in melee. With their guns. As though they had already fixed bayonets. (Those are probably invisible socket bayonets. Excuse the heresy, my lord. Here you go, my lord; the bayonets are here!)

This mod also buffs the Handgun units to be decent at melee (especially against large units), with a charge resist against all units, and an increased unit price to make up for that.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way to add animations without having to overwrite the entire animation table. The animations are also rather crude, with individual combatants holding the guns in mid-air while not in a firing stance fixed individuals holding guns in mid-air while not in firing stance (because I accidentally overwrote DOCK_EQUIPMENT_RIGHT_HAND when I shouldn’t)… but the guns are still off the hands when in melee stances. (That, and the animations are amalgamations of Empire rifle and spear/halberd animations.)

Feel free to use the assets of this mod and do a better job than me on this. FYI the animation entries in questions are "hu1_empire_rifle_halberd" (tied to hu1_empire_rifle_halberd.frg) and "hu1_empire_rifle_spear" (tied to hu1_empire_rifle_spear.frg).

Uses gun model and texture from this mod as they go with the bayonet charges; credit go to Snek.
