Description:

[The prototype is the US Navy USS Boston guided-missile cruiser, and the next narrative is all based on "Once Upon a Time in the Arctic Ocean"]
When Project Bear Peak produced RIM-2 Beagle anti-aircraft missiles and RIM-8 Brass Knight anti-aircraft missiles (which actually have some anti-ship capabilities) and tested them on the test site, it was only a matter of time before the troops were installed. At the same time, in the later period of the Arctic Campaign, the air defense pressure was required much more than before, and the carrier-based aircraft of conventional aircraft carriers could not maintain the air defense needs of multiple fleets. At this time, it is necessary to make the ships have extremely considerable air defense capabilities, not to mention intercepting enemy aircraft within hundreds of kilometers, at least to shoot down enemy aircraft before their bombs fall on their ships. Traditional anti-aircraft guns have become slightly weak, and the two anti-aircraft missiles produced by the "Bear Peak Plan" undoubtedly provide new protection for fleet air defense. But it took a long time to build new ships, so the Navy decided to retrofit the ships for a quick and economical installation.
The ship selected for the modification is the SouthSanFrancisco class of a batch of ten ships "Gadsden" missile cruiser, which was docked in December 1955 for maintenance and modification, the hull damage is not large, mainly for air defense strengthening, the maintenance of the ship undoubtedly provides a good platform for these missiles. Renovation work began on December 25, 1955, and in March 1956 the renovation was completed and sent to the front line, and the hull number was changed from CL-173 to CLG-1. Early ship-to-air missiles also had a platform to show themselves, shooting down hundreds of bombers in just a few months, laying the foundation for the establishment of a no-fly zone over the Arctic Ocean in the future.
After the Battle of the Arctic, as the earliest guided-missile cruiser, the ship continued to serve for a long time in the Thirteenth Fleet. It was decommissioned in 1998 and kept as a museum ship.
