History
DDG-915 Han-Yang was the ex-USS Thomas, the Gearing-class destroyer, DD-833, laid down by Bath Iron Works Corp., Bath, ME. on October 30 1944, launched on March 25, 1945 and commissioned on May 29, 1945. In July, 1962, she entered the Naval Shipyard for a modernization overhaul which gave her protection against biological, chemical, and atomic warfare agents. She has been participating in WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War etc. with splendid merits and receives six battle stars for Korean War service. Other mission included landing, shore firing and convoying etc. and as the first USN destroyer to give the command to fire the Vietnam Communists.
  
Stricken on February 1, 1974, DD-833 was transferred to Taiwan, ROC, re-commissioned on March 17, 1975 by Admiral Sung Chang-Chih, the former Commander-In-Chief of ROC Navy and renamed Han-Yang with the hull number DDG-915. DDG-915, Han-Yang was the only destroyer with NBC protection. In November, 1978, DDG- 915 was under the Wu-Chin II combat system modernization program and equipped with Angle II fire control system. DDG-915 tested firing the Hsiung-Feng I Surface-to-surface missiles and successfully struck the target on April 18, 1980, and became a modern destroyer with 3-dimension capabilities.
  
DDG-915 was in service of ROC Navy for 24 years, and the mission was patrolling
the Taiwan Strait and surrounding waters to convoy offshore-islands-support-and-supply, midshipman training cruise, task flotilla and various missions. She played an important role on the Navy force built-up and fleet combat readiness, secure the safety of Taiwan Strait and Maritime communications.
  
The overall underway hours are 30,946 hours and the range is 280,381 NM. Finally, the DDG-915 Han-Yang was decommissioned on August 16, 1999.94.
