CA-B Buffalo
Project CA-B was a heavy cruiser design proposed by the U.S. Navy in 1940, it forms the basis for the Buffalo found in World of Warships.
In the immediate runup to World War Two, U.S. naval intelligence had confirmed that Japanese heavy cruiser had indeed exceeded the size limit set by the Washington and London naval treaties, and that the Mogami class ‘light’ cruisers were actually now upgraded with ten 8-inch guns. These discoveries led to fears that America’s upcoming Baltimore class cruisers would be outgunned.
To regain superiority in firepower, the Bureau of Ships proposed a new heavy cruiser design, based upon the Baltimore, but with a lengthened hull to accommodate another main gun turret for a total of twelve 8-inch guns. The belt armor would also be increased from 6 to 8 inches, while speed increased from 33 to 34 knots thanks to the longer, sleeker hull. Secondary turrets and machinery would’ve remained largely identical to that of the Baltimore. The addition of another turret and more armor increased CA-B’s displacement to more than 18,000 tons at full load. Ultimately, CA-B never progressed beyond a basic design study; upon the outbreak of the war, it was realised that existing cruisers and aircraft were sufficient to counter the Japanese heavy cruisers.
My interpretation of CA-B here combines features from World of Warship’s Buffalo and from the USN’s ‘Spring Styles’ sketches. As a design that would’ve entered service in late 1944, the ship features large numbers of 40mm AA instead
