尼古拉耶夫市的黑海舰船设计院从1967年开始了苏联第一型综合补给舰的研制工作。设计编号为1833型，参考了美国海军快速战斗支援舰的设计理念。
1978年，首舰“别列津河”号在尼古拉耶夫市的61个巴黎公社社员造船厂建造完成，交给红海军。

【A-historical】
As strategy changed from offshore defense to ocean-going attack, the Soviet Red Navy felt the deficiency of the logistics support fleet which was mainly based on oil and water supply ships, in accompanying the fleet to carry out the long voyage mission.
The Black Sea Ship Design Institute in Nikolayev began the development of the first Soviet replenishment ship in 1967. The project, Type 1833, referenced the design concept of the U.S. Navy’s fast combat support ship.
In 1978, the first ship "Berezina" was completed at the shipyard of 61 members of the Paris Commune in the city of Nikolayev and handed over to the Red Navy.
VMF Baikal is the second ship of this class.
