Carlist War Mod
A mod that adds the much needed flavor of The First Carlist war for Spain into the game!
Both sides are playable and feature flavor for the civil war, without railroading events!
This mod sets out to recreate the First Carlist War better than it currently is in Vanilla, which is, not at all. At most the game pays lip service to the notion, but never acts upon it. The goal for this was to do so in the least rail-roady way possible. As such the mod is by design, simple.
You can play out the civil war however you like, and once it’s over your Spain game continues just as Vanilla with a few tweaks from Journal Entries. Here’s a specific breakdown of how everything works.
Geopolitics:
Now at the beginning of the game Spain is in a civil war with Carlist Spain, both sides wish to annex the other. And have Annex war goals. They both have claims on each others land. They differ in the their laws, Spain has oligarchy and a professional army, where as Carlist Spain utilizes a national militia and acts as an absolute monarchy. Carlist spain has taken hold in the northeastern states of Catalonia, Aragon, and Navarra.
Flavor:
A new historical General for Carlist Spain – Tomás de Zumalacárregui
Both nations feature a Journal Entry for their victory in the war, should Spain win, they gain
Liberal Victory! A modifier that for one year gives +3 Intelligentsia Approval, and -10% enactment time.
Should the Carlists win they get
Carlists Victory! Granting a +5 Landowners Approval, as well as tag changing into Spain, so that they get all future Spain flavor, and colonies that don’t rebel, just now under the rule of the absolute monarchy of Carlos. With a sick flag!
Balance:
I’m sure you’re wondering if it’s possible to win as either side, is it easier as one side than the other? Well, as it was historically, the game simulates Spain having a clear advantage over the Carlists. They have more brigades at game start, more factories, and a navy, which the Carlists do not. That isn’t to say the Carlists can’t win, it’s just difficult.
I’ve found a mean to consistently win as the Carlists, It can be done, it’s just more taxing on the much smaller Carlist economy, meaning you’ll spend more of the game recovering than the Spanish if they won, which I think is realistic.
In an AI vs AI scenario Spain wins every time from my testing. This is balanced for Vanilla of course, results may vary with your given combat mod.
Here’s how to win as Carlist Spain spoilered if you want to discover your own strats
First use the decree to increase troop train rates in all of your states, you can afford it as an absolute monarchy, max out military budget, and taxes. Lower gov spending to minimum. Put the military in power and get them to ‘loyal’ by passing a law they like usually national guard. It’ll give to buffs for this. Delete your ports to save money you don’t have a navy convoys are useless if you can’t protect them. Import guns and artillery from France you won’t need convoys for this. Set trade priortiy to protect local supply so the trade centers can get to max level. Activate conscript centers in all states. Set your main general to defense and recruit two more, set the two new ones to attacking. The enemy should waste their morale on your defender allowing your attackers to move in and win. If you set them all to attack, or all to defense you may not win. This works every time for me!
Conclusion:
I really hope you enjoy the mod! I was very sad to see the Carlist wars not featured in game on launch, so I’ve taken to doing it myself, feel free to let me know if you have any issues or questions!
