USS Arizona
Battleship 1914, commissioned as "Arizona" after the newest state in the Union, was a Pennsylvania-class Super-Dreadnought in the US navy from the end of WWI to the beginning of US involvement in WWII. She and her sister were advertised as the roughest and toughest dreadnoughts on the sea, and she was known to strut from port to port with the fleet to turn heads and intimidate. "The most powerful offensively and defensively." Ironically, Arizona was never given an opportunity to fire her main battery in combat.
Arizona was one of eight battleships present during the Attack on Pearl Harbor; together they were moored in the iconic "Battleship Row" along side Ford Island. Her fate was unlike most of her comrades, however. She suffered up to eight hits total, but one struck just right in a crippling weak spot. The modified 16" AP bomb punched through the decks above and into her forward black powder magazines. The detonation raised the mighty warship out of the water; she wrenched and spit in two at the bulkhead. The blast rocked surrounding ships. The shock wave was so powerful, that fires aboard the repair ship Vestal, moored next to the ill-fated Arizona, were extinguished.
Arizona is my favorite battleship. I can’t tell you why, but I can say that I have spent a lot of time studying models and reports to try and make this as detailed as I can. I hope someone else can enjoy it as much as I do.
