Description:

The Meiji Restoration was triggered by the forced opening of Japan by the United States Navy in 1854. It was a cataclysmic event that precipitated the end of the Shogunate. In my experience, the AI almost never forces open Japan’s market nor have I been able to make it do so through modding the AI strategies.

This mod adds an event that is intended to force Japan out of it’s isolation.

A country with the following criteria will trigger the opening of Japan:
1. Has an active interest in the Japan strategic region.
2. Has the Economic Imperialism strategy
3. Has either the Protectionism or Free Trade trade law.

When this is triggered, the Japanese player or AI is presented with two choices:
1. Defy the barbarians, leading to their ports being bombarded until they relent.
2. Submit to the demands and end their isolation.

Submission greatly angers the landowning class, often leading to them leaving the government. This will trigger the Honorable Restoration event as normal. Additionally, the population gains additional radicalization. I believe this better represents the effects of the forceful opening.

The timing of the event it totally up to the whims of the AI. It could happen in 1836 or still have have not triggered by 1860.
