Strudeler’s Civilizations: Ukraine
Play as the free Ukrainian leaders, Nestor Makhno and Volodymyr Zelenskyy; in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
Ukrainian identity came about during the time that Rus’ was occupied by European crowns that were, at first, not Eastern Slavic and long after the Vikings settled among the Rus’. Many Ukrainians would have mixed reactions to European or Asian powers that disrupted them. The Cumans and Mongols drained Rus’ for centuries which forced other Rus’ cities, such as Novgorod or Muscovy, to rise to prominence instead of the historical city of Kiev. Often did Turks take Ukrainians as slaves and often did the adjacent empires try to convert the Ukrainians on a religious and linguistic level. Realms that carved a path into the Ukraine would include: Lithuania, Poland, Crimea, the Ottoman Turks, Austria, Russia, Germany, the Soviet Union, and the Third Reich. Many movements and polities attempted to maintain an independent Ukraine, such as the brave free Cossacks. Ukrainian culture may extend deep into Don-Kuban region, such territorial claims were made after the Russian Empire collapsed, and some of those claims recognized by the Soviet Union with the Crimea being granted to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
