-Enter the cab and open the electrical cabinet on the rear wall -Turn on all four flip switches and the two relays inside -On the dark gray panel to the far left of the electrical cabinet, use the arrow buttons to raise the pantograph -Press the "Insert Reverser Handle" button and open the red valve labelled "Automatic Brakes Cut-In" -Set reverser to F for forwards or R for reverse, ensure brakes are released, and throttle up

All locomotives in master/slave operations must be equipped with ESS-2. They also need to be connected with electrical cables, of which there are two located in the cab. The cables need to be anchored to the red cable anchors located on the plows at each end of the locomotive. Make sure they connect to the red cable anchors and not anything else. If the locomotive is a master… -Complete startup checklist as normal -On the rear wall, flip the "Short Hood" switch if the locomotive is facing forwards and the "Long Hood" switch if it is facing backwards If the locomotive is a slave… Complete the startup checklist as normal, except: -Close the red valve labelled "Automatic Brakes Cut-In Valve" -Turn off the button labelled "Insert Reverser Handle" -Flip the long/short hood switches on the cab wall as described above -Make sure all brakes are released!
