The purpose is to give units more personalities and for a commander to come to appreciate them from their developing skills. It also about giving the game an overlay of tactical interest being able to use the environment and time of day to the commanders advantage. Alot of concepts were modelled of games like Close Combat and Perfect General.

All the details:
Stamina: All units get more tired as the fighting goes on, if their stamina reaches 0, they become exhausted for 3 strategic turns.
Injuries: If a unit drops to low health they may gain an injury for 3-5 strategic turns
Wavering: Units when at low health have a chance to have a mental break, units that die next to other units may trigger wavering. Giving a sense of a routing system.
Terrain Tactics: Different biomes now give properties, in addition all infantry are stealthed in forests, all light units are stealthed in structures.
Heroic Traits: All units excluding heroes can gain up to 3 – 6 random heroic traits from using abilities.
Day/Night Cycles: A full day goes over 6 turns with 2 guaranteed events of day and the more dangerous night.
More Events: Alot of new events, such as floods, fires and spawners at night. Note: DLC4 events are entwined into the new day and night events.
