History:
Historians speak of a sort of exchange between pontifical circles and the Franks, the first conceding to the latter, to Pepin the Short first and then to Charlemagne, the imperial charism, which was to link them to the Roman Empire. of the West "for the defense of Christendom, and receiving in return the recognition of an alleged" donation of Constantine "in favor of the temporal power of the Church over the city of Rome and the neighboring territories. The growing power of the pope inevitably led him to face the Byzantine Empire, irritated by the political role ever more openly and freely assumed by the Church, the conflict culminated in the controversy over the iconoclast, rejected by Pope Gregory II. The Byzantine emperor Leo III finally excluded Rome from the Empire, so that Rome could only count on his alliance with the Franks, thanks to which the city did not fall into the hands of the many enemies who surrounded it. It was at this time that the pontifical states, of which Rome was the capital, were formed, which soon became the world center of Christianity of Latin rite. The power of the Pope did not yet allow him to govern or defend the state, but it had to grow rapidly and the republican experiments lost their importance until their complete disappearance. In addition, at the time of the Renaissance, Rome also became a very important cultural center, which disputed in Florence and Venice the most significant artistic innovations. When Pepin III defeated the Lombards in 756, Rome became the capital of the Papal States, a territorial entity at least nominally governed by the Papacy. In practice, the government of the city was disputed by many factions of the Roman nobility, the pope, the Holy Roman Empire and, occasionally, republican insurrections. After the suppression of the Republic of 1434, the papacy subjected the government of Rome to ecclesiastical bureaucracy. At that time, Rome became the world center of Christianity and played a political role that made it one of the most important cities of the old continent. In the arts, if Florence was the cradle of humanism and the Renaissance, Rome was also from the fifteenth century, and later in the seventeenth, it was to become the center of the Baroque, whose architecture influenced many its neighborhoods.
